Hello,
Time for another almost but not quite bi-annual journal update! Bazinga!
*Just a quick warning- this is a pretty long and boring journal for y'all to be reading so I don't mind if you don't. It's more of a checklist for myself*
To kick off, I turned 20 last weekend which has got me worried because by my calculations (and obsessively checking every artist I finds' age), an Illustrator reaches his/her peak at 24
. Then improvement slows to a snailpace and you're stuck with what you've got up to that point- yowzers.
Moving swiftly on this brings me to the final hand in of my first year at University- which is Friday, then I'm done for the Summer. So let's all sit down for a little year in review...
Points to consider:
- I realised that I make next to no 'traditional' (or digital) sketches of any sort. Uh-Oh spaghetti-ohs that's bad news for an arteest such as myself. Note to Kris: Start sketchin' stuff! You don't draw enough! This is perhaps a little alleviatable (?) because I've been doing Uni work instead, but still there should be some extra curricular drawing going on. (Take a look at my Deviations since September- there's only 1 official none-uni submission)
! Also exampled by the fact I've not had a proper sketchbook since 2006.
- Next and (probably) in relation to the above point. Lets get busy with some good ol' traditional art. When I started this year at Uni, I was scoring poorer marks in the pen/pencil/paper/plasticine/real life projects than I was in the digital ones because I had no confidence (too light with me markings, too careful/frustrated with symmetry). As mentioned earlier- it's been 4 years since I had a proper sketchbook, which means, it's been 4 years since I created proper real life art in real life. Damn girl!
Sure I've done a couple of canvas paintings here and there but definitely nothing substantial. Everything's gone digital nowadays, when I should be sharing the spicy chicken pasta of art out to both mediums. By no means will I stop being a digital illustrator- but I should equal out the confidence in both subjects.
- And now for something positive- my animation work has came in leaps and bounds since I started at University. For some reason I went from what was practically timed slide-shows (the 2 music vids I did) to full motion (Super Cycle) in one foul swoop and I've been on the steady up-hill since- what's that all about!? Well it was all about the state of mind. I went from thinking (the music vids) "I'm naturally rubbish at this here animation lark, but I like the film-making aspect of it so am gonna carry on making me may-as-well-be slideshows" to thinking "May as well try and be good at animation eh" and Voila! Transformed.
And that's about it. I think over the first year, I've improved in my illustration in the way that I would have naturally (practice aside)- there is improvement but it's not been aided by spending time with it. But I've improved in my animation tremendously.
So in the summer- hopefully you'll see more real life paintings and drawings from me as well as more of the same old same old. I can't wait to be able to work on my own thang again. Thats it, get outta my house MTV! Go on, scram!
